At the end of the 1994-95 season Bob Davis brought together a group of playing members with the aim of forming at Coalville RFC a mini and junior section. Taking the lead in this initiative with Bob Davis was Richard Sawbridge. Several other members were also involved including Phil Kinnear, Kevin Wesson and others. By the Autumn of 1995 several teams had been formed and the mini and junior section was far enough advanced to have found funding for sets of shirts for most of the teams being fielded.
It was recognised that the key to success in forming the mini and junior section was to get youngsters involved. Fundamental within this challenge was, once again, to introduce a different game to the Coalville and district schoolchildren whose experience and inclination was for ‘soccer’. To draw youngsters into the game at half term, 1995, the newly formed mini and junior section organised an Autumn Rugby School at the Memorial Ground, the purpose being, of course, to introduce rugby to beginners. The ‘school’ was a great success with over 75 children attending, which kept coaches Bob Davis, Phil Kinnear, John Leeson, Kevin Wesson, Richard Sawbridge and George Ferguson very busy. The mini and junior sections were truly up and running.
The first outing for Coalville mini section happened in the Autumn when 65 youngsters turned out at Ashby RFC’s ground. Under-eight, under-nine, under-ten and under-eleven teams were fielded. Overall the first outing was deemed to have been very successful, Bob Davis was reported to have been extremely happy that the all those who took part had got, under their belt, their first taste of competitive rugby. The historical significance of this feat did not go unnoticed as in Bob Davis’ words - the results were irrelevant as it was a historic and memorable day. Before the end of November Coalville had up and running under eight, nine, ten, elevens and twelves and on Sunday 28th, an under 15 team was fielded for the first time. By the beginning of the 1996-97 season the Coalville mini and junior section was able to field teams for all age groups
from under eights to under seventeen.
The end of the 2001-2002 season brought festival rugby to Coalville’s Memorial Ground. First, in early April, when the mini section hosted the Four Counties Cup, an eight team tournament for under sevens and under eights. Secondly, at the end of the month the Leicestershire Rugby Union Mini Rugby Festival was staged at the Memorial Ground with 15 Leicestershire clubs sending over 1000 players, in the under nine, ten, eleven and twelve age groups, to the tournament. The whole 37 acres of the Memorial Ground was smothered with players and their parents. Although rather cold on the day the event was a spectacular success and testament to the Coalville organising committee’s business like approach, particularly the then Chairman, Steve Rice.
Since its foundation Coalville minis and juniors have engendered success for individual players and teams. Firstly, by way of selection for County beginning in 2003 when six Coalville under-15s were in the County squad. In the same year three under-16s were invited to join Leicester Tigers Academy and Craig Fowkes was selected for England under-18s, a feat repeated by Jon Neville some seasons later. At the team level the under-14s won their age group County Cup in 2006, the Plate Final in 2009 and were loosing finalists in 2007. The under-15s won the County Cup final in 2003 whist the under-16s won the Plate Final in 2010 and were loosing finalists in 2003. The under-17s were losing Cup Finalists in 2005.
By 2001 there was a ground swell for Coalville to have a women’s team, this grew to a crescendo and in February it was announced that Coalville would develop an under 16s women’s rugby team. By the middle of April 2001, the club’s desire to have a women’s rugby team had come to fruition and the Coalville Vixens were born. This team achieved an above average success winning more times than loosing. By the start of the 2003-2004 season ten Vixens players were selected to play for Midlands Baa Baas in a fixture against an American College XV touring the UK. At the same time developments in womens rugby at Coalville allowed a senior Womens XV to be fielded. In October 2003 they played their first league match in the Midlands East 4 league. Gaining promotion to the Midlands 3 East league for the start of the 2004-2005 season the team go on to top that league at the end of 2006-2007 season winning all twelve league games scoring 358 points with only 27 against. Over the season they played 22 games and won 21, Regulars in that team, Emma Hill and Robyn Steward were selected to play for England Womens under-19s in two matches. After a small hiatus in 2008 womens rugby at Coalville continues to thrive and is in good heart.
