After a saga that had commenced in 1995 Coalville RFC, in 2000, found themselves endowed with undoubtedly the best rugby facilities, outside of Welford Road, in Leicestershire. The clubhouse has six changing rooms, the grounds have four well drained pitches, with room for further pitches. The Memorial Ground is truly magnificent and a fine tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in two world wars. It is also marvellous as a rugby football facility for those boys and girls, men and women, of all ages interested in the sport.
Of course there are many bright facets to Coalville RFC, not least the crop of players who played in the under 17 team in the 2001-2002 season. They have shown an ability to revitalise Coalville’s fortunes and take the Club to the highest level ever in its history. The standard of rugby has been outstanding. The players have been amongst the greatest ever to play for the club. County representation has, across the board, has been at an all time high.
Coalville’s resurgence as a power in Midlands rugby began in the 2003-2004 season when they won the Midlands 4 East (South) League. As the stars of the Junior section matured and migrated to the senior XV so the Club’s ability to sustain strong performances over a season increased. The season 2007-2008, known as the “Great Escape” was probably the most outstanding sustained performance the club had produced in its, then, 104 year history. Given less of a handicap the league title was surely there for the taking. The following season opened with a 119-3 victory over Westbridgeford with 17 tries scored and Coalville’s Fly-half, Michael Hodges, converting all 17. When contacted by the Coalville Times the Rugby Football Union said that Hodges performance had only been bettered by Rob Andrew in 1996 when he kicked 18 conversion in a Courage League match! The season 2009-2010 did see the Midlands 2 East (North)* title come to Coalville as they romped through the season time and time again taking opposition to the cleaners scoring over 1000 points in the process. Probably this was the greatest side ever to take the field in Coalville colours eclipsing that magnificent XV of 1938-1939. The 2010-2011 season saw Coalville promoted to the Midlands 1 East where they fared extremely well finishing in the top half of the table. Consolidation had been achieved for a future challenge on the title.
Alan Frost, former Club Captain and President, a true stalwart of Coalville RFC, died in 2005 and in his honour Coalville RFC commenced an annual 10-a-side tournament, with the inaugural tournament being held in August 2006. In 2009 the tournament was sponsored by Heineken. And at the opening of its Quasquicentennial Anniversary the LRU supported the Coalville 10s by holding a President’s luncheon.
