6. 1980 – 2000

The twenty years from the start of the 1980-81 season brought the maturity of a group of exceptional players, who had formed the first Coalville Colts team in 1976, and also their retirement. By the start of the 1987-88 season these players had gelled, together with another cohort of very good colts players, to make an outstanding team. This improvement peaked during the 1989-90 season when Coalville won their league and also had one of the six best playing records of any Coalville 1st XV. From that date onwards there could be seen a gradual decline in playing record of the 1st XV and in the number of teams the club could field of a Saturday. The demise of the Colts XV in the 1990s further weakened, but not catastrophically, Counterbalanced against this demise was the foundation of the mini and junior section that has developed into one of the great strengths of the club.

What shines out like a star in this twenty year period is the club’s good fortune in selling the Broom Leys Road ground and the moving of the Memorial Ground to its new site off Hall Lane, Whitwick. There were great effort put in by several members, not least that by Dave Burchell and Dave Pickering, to get this to happen. But happen it did and Coalville RFC became the proud owners of a purpose built clubhouse and 37 acres of grounds with four pitches and acres of space for further pitches if, and when, required.

The outstanding season during this period was 1989-1990 with the league record showing 10 played and 10 won, with 228 points for and only 39 against, a tremendous achievement. The final league game, although not pertinent to the outcome of the league, was a local derby against Market Bosworth, on the day Coalville were too good for Bosworth and they came in victors by 19 points to nine. For the season it was - played 35, won 31, lost three and drawn one, with a massive 722 points for and 251 against. It had been one of the best playing years ever in the club’s history and with the Courage League Championship to boot.
